Resume Rabbit?

Postby Overtherainbow » Mon Jun 07, 2010 2:57 pm

I've been unemployed for an unbearably long time now and believe that if what you're doing doesn't work - try something else. I need my resume re-written and have been considering careerbuilder's resume rabbit - the level that sends it out for you - not real expensive but not real cheap either.

Has anyone had any experience with services like this and/or can anyone recommend any service like this?

Any help would be appreciated, time (ue) is quickly running out.

you know, when i was inbetween jobs last time i thought about doing this... not through one of the major sites but through an independent person that a buddy of mine had used.. this was in 2007 so i dunno if they're even around anymore, but for $300 the person did a pretty nice resume.

really though it was 80% just changing the format to one that was pretty nice and then the rest just rewording some stuff.. i don't know how much it really worked though or not.

i ended up just taking his rewritten resume and copying the format because i liked it. :)

also, we used to have a recruiter who visited the site awhile back who offered resume proofing/consulting.. it was Erin wasn't it? is she still on here to send PM's to?

if you want to see a copy of my resume send me a priv msg
keep widdling away at my rights, its just a small price to pay.. each and every time.

I was out of work for 2 years last time (2000-2002) and what I was told then by several HR people was to tailor your resume to the job. Don't lie on it but make it read like you are a perfect fit for their position. Also use a lot of the same key words they use in their job posting as 90% of the big companies use resume reading software to weed out the ones the HR people even see.

I suppose the resume blasting stuff could work as it will get your resume to a lot of places butI tend to think it probably won't get you in the door.

I even thought about hiring a headhunter but decided against it after being contacted by so many that said they had the perfect job for me until I read the job description and saw that I was not a fit and it was something I would not have been qualified for. Made me think that they don't read the resume that just look for key words.

All that said, you are not alone there are a really large number of people looking for a job now. After looking for a year I decided to just retire this time.

yeah definitely tailor your resume to the job your applying for.. as someone who reads resume's here at work, people who have a bunch of generic stuff/little to do with the job posting requirements usually get set aside pretty fast.

for instance, we're looking for a Sr level Linux SA right now and getting resume's that might mention "deployed large linux environment" and then nothing else... huh? next.

btw, what is it you do, OTR? maybe someone on here knows of openings...

Overtherainbow -

I will offer to rewrite your resume for you if you would like. I do a lot of technical writing and receive compliments on my resume frequently. (I have written several for friends and family in the past, all of which are employed now, thank god!)

One thing I know is if you update your resume monthly on the online services (Monster, Dice, Linked in, Etc.), Just delete a word and re-type it, you will immediately start to get hits from recruiters.

It is a tough job market out there and you have to make yourself look better than anyone else to survive!

WOW! Talk about support! Thank you everyone for your comments and offers. I've posted cries for help on many different websites (facebook, church, etc) and have NEVER gotten this kind of response. Guess it goes to show just how much of a small town we really are - everyone helps each other - one of the many reasons I love living here, one of the many reasons I am fighting so hard to be able to stay.

Fook - the first paragraph of my resume reads:
"Results oriented self-starter with proven contract negotiation and administration ability. Key contributor and team player for major construction projects. Successful owner of three (3) internet businesses. Consistently finds creative solutions to uncommon problems. Proven ability to develop and maintain critical subcontractor and owner relationships."

I have been in construction for over... well a very long time, traditionally in a project coordinator (glorified administrative assistant??) position. However, my skills could easily flow into just about any industry (Excel is Excel and Access is Access that makes any sense)

Tad - thank you for the offer, I'm deeply grateful. I'll pm you.

Blues, unfortunately retirement is not now, nor probably forever, and option. However, thank you for the thought.

Here is a link to my resume http://www.linkedin.com/in/nanciwallace

Again, to everyone - I'm deeply grateful for everyone's support.
